Utah Small Business
Utah small business has a storied history. Early fur traders and Mormon settlers were the stepping stones for commerce that have led to industry and entrepreneurship today.
Shopping locally is a long standing tradition for residents and visitors. But why is it important? We hear the mantra all the time: โshop local.โ In this short article weโll cover 3 reasons to support small businesses in the State of Utah and beyond.

1. Job Opportunity
The widely accepted definition of a small business is a company with 500 or less employees and does less than 7.5 million annually in receipts. According to the Small Business Administration over 99% of all Utah businesses are considered small. Nearly half of all Utah employees work for a small business.
Utah Small businesses also provide goods / services and employment opportunities in areas larger companies consider too small of a market. In more populated urban areas the presence of small businesses indicate a thriving economy. More employment opportunities create a healthy competition between employers to provide an excellent workplace environment.

2. Community
Utah is also known as the Beehive State because it emulates the hard working team effort that can be observed in the busy nature of the honey producing insects. Neighbors supporting neighbors so the entire hive can thrive. Yes, that was an intentional rhyme.
Small business is more than just a hardware store, auto shop, or clothing company. Local companies represent what a specific community has to bring to the table. Think about that small town dinner you love to visit. Itโs a landmark for the area that people know and residents are proud of. You can get fast food burgers anywhere, but where else can you get a quadruple-stack-attack (ok I made that up. but you get the idea).

3. Specialty Products
When youโre looking for something truly unique, where do you begin your search? Online is a typical starting point for typing in the specifics of what youโre after. More often than not youโll find yourself on the page of a small outfit (maybe even a small utah business).
Large companies usually focus on one size fits all products that can be mass produced. That niche item youโre scavenging for is far more likely to be carried by a smaller operation either online or at a local brick & mortar.

Support Local
Theyโre a lot of good companies out there. Some of them are big and some are small and I get it: Sometimes you have to go with availability, affordability, and convenience. Thereโs nothing wrong with that. Just remember to lean toward the little guy when you can! The economy here in Utah and across America excel when small business is supported.

Iโm not going to do the whole third person bio thing – As a patriotic outdoorsman, I love America and itโs wild places. I grew up in Oregon and moved to Utah in 2009 to get my bachelors degrees in Psychology. I’m an infantryman in the Army National Guard and like to backpack. When Iโm not creating American made products for my small business youโll find me weaving through a canyon or scrambling up a ridge line.
