Utah Leaf Peeping
~ without the crowds ~
Utah Leaf peeping season is short. Everyone seems to funnel into the same canyons to take in the vibrant mountains splashed with red shrub oak. But some of us are looking for crowds of aspens not people.
I put together a short list of three lesser-known spots to admire autumn in the Wasatch Mountains:
Miners Trail
Located near the end of Pinecrest Canyon Road at the back of Emigration Canyon you’ll find a little trailhead with a small dirt parking lot.
This relatively flat trail quickly rewards hikers with sweeping views of the Wasatch.
Park City Mountain Resort
Everyone knows Park City for legendary slopes and single track. But during the fall you can park in the main lot and walk straight up any one of the ski runs while dipping in and out of golden aspen groves.
My wife and I do this every year. It’s prime Utah leaf peeping, accessible, and the only people we see are the occasional mountain bikers.
Lambs Canyon
The entire canyon is beautiful and filled to the brim with fall colors. Anywhere is good to Pullover and snap a picture of Utah’s fall leaves.
If you have time, climb the trail and peek into Millcreek Canyon. The views are worth it.
Even reliable spots can be hit and miss though. Windstorms and other weather conditions can put a damper on leaf season at any location.
When it comes to looking for leaves I have one motto: Fall-ow the colors, not the crowds.

I’m not going to do the whole third person bio thing – As a patriotic outdoorsman, I love America and it’s wild places. I grew up in Oregon and moved to Utah in 2009 to get my bachelors degrees in Psychology. I’m an infantryman in the Army National Guard and like to backpack. When I’m not creating American made products for my small business you’ll find me weaving through a canyon or scrambling up a ridge line.
